Welcome to Glenmont United Methodist Church Online.

Norman Vincent Peale, in his book This Incredible Century presents this story.

President Dwight Eisenhower described his mother as a smart and saintly lady.  "Often in this job I've wished I could consult her.  But she is in heaven.  However, many times I have felt I knew what she would say."

One night in their farm home, Mrs. Eisenhower was playing a card game with her boys.  "Now, don't get me wrong," said the former president, "it was not with those cards that have kings, queens, jacks, and spades on them.  Mother was too straitlaced for that."  President Eisenhower said the game they were playing was called Flinch.

"Anyway, Mother was the dealer, and she dealt me a very bad hand.  I began to complain.  Mother said, "Boys, put down your cards.  I want to say something, particularly to Dwight.  You are in a game in your home with your mother and brothers who love you.  But out in the world you will be dealt bad hands without love.  Here is some advice for you boys.  Take those bad hands without complaining and play them out.  Ask God to help you, and you will win the important game called life."  The president added, "I've tried to follow that wise advice always."

Obviously Dwight Eisenhower did indeed face many lonely "bad hands" in the rest of his life as he led American forces in North Africa, and then oversaw D-Day and the battle for Europe.  Then he endured the tumultuous times of the cold-war during his presidency.  But the lessons he learned from his mother helped carry him on--and aid a nation and the world as well.

As we consider our blessings of freedom on this Fourth of July, may we consider how we may also bless others by doing our best, even when circumstances may not be what we would like.

Pastor Lee

A NOTE FROM THE EDITOR

We are starting two new sections in the newsletter this month.  The first section is titled "FOCUS ON:  " and will highlight a different member or family each month.  This project has been undertaken by Helen Jenkins and I wan to thank her for this effort.  If she comes to you please say a resounding YES!!  The second section will be titled "MEMBER INFORMATION AND PERSONALS".  This section could include such information as new members, congratulations, appeals for assistance, obituaries, thank you, and any other information that might fit under the title.
Take time to visit our church website at www.glenmontumc.org. Meg Shaw has spent a lot of time working on updating the website to ensure the information is accurate and up to date. The site has prayer requests, articles, pictures, calendar, and information of interest to our members. It is a good way for you to introduce others to our church, its people, and our activities. If you see any errors let either Meg or myself know.

If you have an article or something you would like to put in the newsletter you can always email it direct to me at john.sutton7@verizon.net.

FROM THE WORSHIP COMMITTEE

Please accept warm greetings on behalf of the Worship Committee of the Glenmont United Methodist Church.  I would like to thak the members of the Committee for their steadfast work in the church.  The Committee would like to express it thanks and appreciation to the Ushers/Greeters, Crucifers and Acolytes who serve every Sunday.  The Church is blessed to have these men and women who serve with a willingness of heart.  One of our Crucifers, Chidi Okunji, will be going to college in the fall We wish him God's blessings and success in all his endeavors.

The Worship Committee has, over the past few years, given awards to members of the church for their dedication and commitment in serving God at Glenmont.  The recent recipient of this award is Mr. Charles Cooper, who has been a member of Glenmong for many years.  He is a member of Chancel Choir and also served as Membership Secretary, together with his late wife, Olivia Cooper.  We wish him well.  Please le us know of any member you feel should receive an award.

Remain blessed.

FROM THE  TRUSTEES

We continue looking into replacement of the HVAC units in the office spaces.  Two proposals have been received and we are waiting to receive one more.

The initial roof and window work has been completed by the contractor.  However, this effort found another major problem; the wood around the window glass is completely rotten and needs to be replaced.  This work was not in the original contract and will need to be negotiated.  The wood needs to be replaced to ensure the windows do not fall out.  A proposal has been received and we are evaluating at this time.

A lot of work has been completed on various doors within the Sanctuary building and breezeway entrances.

John Sutton, Chair, Board of Trustees.

FROM THE FINANCE COMMITTEE

Glenmont United Methodist Church appreciates the continued generous giving of its members.  However, each summer seems to bring a slump in our weekly giving.  Please try to maintain your regular giving during this period as the bills continue to come in the mail and payroll, taxes, and apportionments must be paid.

The audit of the church financial records for 2009 has been completed and no significant deficiencies were reported.  Also, there were no exceptions noted during the audits of the UMYF, UMW, UMM, and Thrift Shop.

The Treasurer's report of June 8 showed a balance of $21,830 in the checking account and a total of $18,750 in the two other accounts.  The two certificates of deposit totaled $26,816 and the investment fund was valued at $202,645.  The apportionment payments were up-to-date.

FOOD PANTRY
If you’re like me, I go to the store thinking I will buy something for the food pantry, get involved with my own groceries and possibly forget at times about those who do not have enough to eat. Please don’t forget those who can’t make it through the month without the assistance of the Glenmont Food Pantry. Pick up an extra jar of peanut butter, spaghetti sauce, beans, rice or pasta. God has blessed all of us and we need to pass it on.
