Zambia Project
Leader: Jeanne Neibel

June 2010

The Glenmont UMC community and others have sponsored the education of over seventy Zambian children.  This program has been in effect for more than seven years.

This past month results of the Zambian National Grade Seven and Nine Exams were posted.  ALL eight of our grade seven students passed to grade eight.  ALL eight of our grade nine students passed to grade ten.  Of those eight students seven received a coveted certificate indicating passing marks in ALL subjects.  Without passing marks students are not allowed to continue on with school.  These wonderful achievements are both remarkable and very unusual.  Most children are not able to attend school regularly due to a lack of funds.  Therefore few pass the national exams.

In 2007 our church family, Delta Kappa Gamma Educational Foundation, and many others built the large Ngombe Township Reading Center in Lusaka, Zambia.  Several thousand excellent books are housed in this building.  Originally this center was built to help with the education of our sponsored students.  Now it is open to all.  A mentoring program is held at this center and has been central to the success of our sponsored students.

It is clear that there is a direct correlation of being sponsored and able to go to school every day, to doing well in school.  Having full-time access to our Ngombe Township Reading Center is invaluable.  Most Zambian students don't have books, let alone a reading center.  Our sponsored students are very fotunate.

The sponsorship program and reading center are just part of the Zambian Project.  There are other activities and many needs in this project.  If you would like to learn more and be a part of this opportunity to make a difference, please call Jeannie Niebel at 301-452-0498 or e-mail me at jniebel1@verizon.net.
